Maple Tahini Energy Balls
Ever heard of seed-cycling?
I’ve recently started seed-cycling since my naturopath recommended it to me and it’s fantastic! But what exactly IS seed cycling? It is the rotation of specific seeds throughout the menstrual cycle; it’s great for restoring hormone balance within the body, which is something I’ve personally needed help with for a long time.
Each type of seed contains specific lignans and fatty acids that provide the body with what it needs to create normal hormone cycles. From days 1-14 we use ground flax and/or ground pumpkin seeds, and from days 15-27 we use ground sesame and/or sunflower seeds. Pretty simple, huh?
I just started week 3 and I’ve been having a lot of fun experimenting with recipes to ensure I’m getting my seeds in every day. This recipe makes 7 balls (1 per day for a week), but you can double up if you’re feelin’ it. It’s best to grind your seeds up fresh, so I wouldn’t recommend making a large batch if you’re planning on using these for seed-cycling. If you’re making them just for fun then go crazy!
On top of helping to regulate our hormones, sesame seeds offer a variety of other health benefits as well.
They are a great source of fiber, which is known for supporting digestive health
They provide us with plant-based protein and healthy fats
They are high in methionine and cysteine (two amino acids)
A good source of B vitamins
Rich in antioxidants, including gamma-tocopherol, a form of vitamin E
They may even help reduce inflammation
These babies are nice and sweet from the dates and maple syrup, but they also still carry that beautiful earthy flavour from the tahini. I’m also thinking that a little chocolate drizzle wouldn’t hurt either, just sayin’. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Maple Tahini Energy Balls
Makes 7 balls
Keep in the fridge in an airtight container
INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup raw sesame seeds
1/3 cup rolled oats
6 dates
3 tbsp tahini
2 tsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1-3 tbsp water
DIRECTIONS:
In a food processor, combine sesame seeds and oats for about 30 seconds
Add the dates and process again until well incorporated
Add tahini, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon, process again until a dough begins to form
The dough should stick together when you press it. If not, add water 1 tbsp at a time (processing to combine) until it does. I used 2!
Line a plate with parchment paper. Using a spoon, scoop the dough and roll into 7 balls using your hands
To firm them up, place balls in the fridge for 20-30 minutes! Of course, you can eat one right away if you can’t wait, it’ll just be a little soft
